Dr. Vera Mazurak

Associate Professor, University of Alberta

Dr. Mazurak earned her PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Alberta where she currently holds tenure as an Associate Professor.  She also owns a consulting practice, where she has worked locally and internationally to assist clients in promoting health and wellness through nutrition and healthy lifestyles.  Dr. Mazurak's research interests relate to lipid metabolism in disease states with an emphasis on relationships between inflammatory processes and essential fatty acids.  Her most recent work has focussed on defining nutritional requirements for people who have cancer and finding ways to overcome malnutrition during cancer therapies and advanced disease.  Her research uses humans, animals and cell culture to address the following specific areas of interest

  • defining nutritional requirements for people who have cancer and determining ways to prevent or overcome malnutrition during chemotherapy and advanced disease.
  • determining mechanisms for aberrations in lipid metabolism in disease states characterized by low grade inflammation such as Metabolic Syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Investigating how inflammatory mediators impact on the ability to metabolize essential fats
