This session will be used to provide an update on Health Canada's key activities within the Food Directorate and Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion (ONPP).

Health Canada Food Directorate Update
Dr. William Yan

In support of Health Canada's mission to help Canadians maintain and improve their health, the Food Directorate is the federal health authority responsible for establishing policies, setting standards and providing advice and information on the safety and nutritional value of food. The Bureau of Nutritional Sciences (BNS) is a specialized scientific bureau of the Food Directorate responsible for nutrition-related policies, standards, advice and information and its responsibilities flow from the nutrition-related provisions of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations.  BNS develops regulations and guidelines to address the nutritional quality and safety of foods available for sale on the Canadian market; is responsible for the application of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations in evaluating the nutritional adequacy and safety of regulatory submissions; and undertakes laboratory research, monitoring and surveillance to support evidence-based decision making. BNS works closely with other Federal and Provincial government partners, non-government health and educational organizations, the food industry and consumers on a variety of nutrition issues. Current initiatives include amendments to nutrition labelling regulations, revision to fortification policies, and management of supplemented foods. Dr. William Yan, Director of Nutritional Sciences, will be providing an update on the key priorities for BNS.

Health Canada Update: Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion
Krista Esslinger

The Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion (ONPP) serves as the focal point and authoritative source for public health nutrition and healthy eating policy and promotion in Canada.  This session will provide an update on some of the initiatives underway in the Office.

A key responsibility of ONPP is to develop and promote dietary guidance to support the nutritional health and well-being of Canadians. This work includes monitoring and reviewing the evidence underpinning guidance, developing dietary guidance, and supporting the implementation of guidance by others into various applications.

This session will describe aspects of dietary guidance development and the types of evidence used to inform healthy eating recommendations.  This will include a discussion on methodology and considerations when developing healthy dietary patterns.  An update on the evidence review process being used by Health Canada to gather, assess, and analyze data relevant to dietary guidance will also be provided.

Learning Objectives:
1.  To gain an understanding of key activities of the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion.
2.  To understand how different evidence inputs are evaluated and synthesized to inform the development of dietary guidance.
